Meet Mr. Martin Green: A watch aficionado at large

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Martin Green, who is both Editor-at-Large for Haute Time Magazine, as well as the Resident Gentleman for Quill & Pad. Although he specializes in watches, he frequently branches out discussing cars, yachts, scents and other topics that capture his attention.
What do you find so fascinating about watches?
My focus is on mechanical watches, which are as obsolete as steam trains, yet there is this constant effort to continue to make them better, more precision, with additional functions and more beautiful. It is pure passion that drives this industry, and I love to tell the stories behind these watches, about the history that they have, and the people that make them.
Any brands in particular that you like?
I am blessed, or cursed, with a very eclectic taste, and there are a great many different brands that like. What I wear myself is a little bit more limited. I am Resident Gentleman of Quill & Pad, among other things, because I am so fond of dress watches. Especially ultra-slim watches are a particular favorite of mine.

You say blessed or cursed, what do you mean with that?
When you tend to like a lot of different watches, you also tend to see more watches that you would like to have yourself, and that can get costly. I have always greatly admired people who could pick only one great watch and wear that all the time. As much as I want to, I don't think I can.
Do you consider yourself a gentleman?
I think that the most un-gentleman act you can do is proclaim yourself a gentleman. I think it is how others might perceive your actions and appearance that will lead them to call you a gentleman. I do like what a gentleman stands for, and I think that we need more of them in this world. If I am one, I leave to others, but I do enjoy the finer things in life, and among them clothing is important.
What is your clothing style?
My personal style is quite traditional, with the occasional rebellious dash of color, or unique detail that you don't expect. I love suits, to me actually, nothing is more comfortable than a well-cut suit. I am very detail oriented, and especially font of cufflinks. I don't wear much jewelry, but with cuff links, you can really act out!
Any favorite clothing brands?
I never think of brands, to be honest. Even the most prestigious label doesn't mean that the quality and fit is perfect for you. I think that custom-made clothing is one of the greatest luxurious in the world. I love going through the process of selecting fabrics, and determining all the details, as well as trusting the expertise of true crafts(wo)man to make it. Of course, not everything is custom made, and then I pay mostly attention to the quality of the fabrics and cut of a piece of clothing, I never buy anything just because it is from a specific brand.
Any specific type of watch, with a specific outfit is your favorite?
Actually several, and they even change with the seasons! In the cold winter weather, I love to wear tweed, and I think that it is always complimented best by rose gold watches with dark brown straps. A nice classic suit with a slim dress watch is always a favorite and in the summer I prefer Polo's and Khaki's as casual dress and for that, and the warmer weather, a rubber strap like on the Bvlgari Diagono is perfect, or the one on the Gavox Avidiver, a small Belgium watch brand. The watches can then also be a bit more sportive.
If money wouldn't be an issue, what watch(es) would you consider?
That is actually quite easy: in the 1990's Cartier made a version of the Pasha with a perpetual calendar and a minute repeater. At that time it was the most complicated Cartier ever made, and I have always wanted one, preferably one of the five that they made in platinum.
What’s the most exorbitant watch you’ve ever seen?
Define exorbitant I would almost say! As part of my job, I have seen some of the most lavish watches out there. The diamond set watches are always impressive. Hublot has some stunning pieces, but also Graff and Jacob & Co really know how to incorporate them well into their watches. Then there are the unique complications, the watches that combine multiple complications or incorporate unique metiers de arts into their watches. It is all that creativity, technical know-how and artistic expertise that makes it such an incredible interesting topic.
