When the credits rolled for Jonnie To and Wai Ka-Fai's Mad Detective, I scratched my head, unsure of what had just happened. Oh, I understood the general gist of it. A brilliant schizophrenic cop named Chan Kwai-Bun who has the power to see people's inner personalities is brought in on a case of a missing in action cop. Of course, Bun had been previously fired for cutting off his ear as a present for his retiring boss. Bun is followed by a spectre of his divorced wife who acts as his guide and psuedo-conscience. But his real divorced wife also joins in the case along with the seven split personalities of the missing cop who torment him and the inner child of his partner and holy crap all of this is confusing. This film feels like if Park Chan-wook lost his mind and tried to make a Darren Aronofsky-esque crime thriller. But really, the film that kept coming to mind while watching this film was The Big Sleep, a classic film noir that also made absolutely no sense. Folks...I simply didn't understand the plot to Mad Detective. After I finished it, I read its wikipedia entry several times and I still couldn't figure out what had happened. This begs the question: is it my fault for not understanding it or is it the film-makers? I'll give the directors the benefit of the doubt.
