If you're a grooming junkie who gets haircuts at regular intervals, then chances are 4 out of every 5 barbers must have recommended the faux hawk hairstyle. Well, that's because the hairstyle has taken men by storm.
An orthodox cousin of the popular Mohawk, faux hawk doesn't involve cutting hair so drastically on the sides and back of the head. So, ideally you just glue up the middle part of your regular hair so that it is in the style of the Mohawk. However, that's not it; the style can be worn in many different ways. MensXP gives you the lowdown.
The Look
Once popularized by the super-stylish David Beckham, faux hawk has caught the fancy of many men since then. From current football sensation Cristiano Ronaldo to Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to celebrities such as Sidhartha Mallya, Brad Pitt, Taylor Lautner and Jensen Ackles, everybody seems to have been bitten by the faux hawk bug, and rightly so! The hairstyle not only looks stylish but is also very practical as it's easy to maintain. However, the great thing about faux hawk is that it complements well with most young Indian male faces. Read on to know how to get the look.
The Cut
The hairstyle is best suited for men with either curly or straight hair. It is also a clever way to divert attention from hair loss near the temples. Your hair should be a minimum half inch all around your head, with 2 inches in length being the maximum length for the hairstyle. The principle difference between the Mohawk and faux hawk is that the former calls for the sides of the head to be shaved leaving only the strip of hair up the middle and back to the nape of the head. With a faux hawk, the sides are not completely shaven.
How To Style It
Faux hawk fits into the mainstream lifestyle as effortlessly as it does into the corporate work environment which is why it is a versatile style. Styling it completely up by creating spikes is the traditional way to wear a faux hawk. All you need is a touch of gel and your fingers to style your hair up. Occasionally, you might need some hairspray to tame flyaways. Comb your faux hawk to the side to really change your look. You can do this by creating a deep side part and sweeping the front of your hair across your forehead. Apply some mousse or pomade and let your hair air dry to create natural waves, or use a straightening serum to create a smooth, slick back look.
The fact that you need only a minimum of 3-4 minutes to style the faux hawk makes this style very doable. Of course, it's also about the confidence with which you can carry off this hairdo, but that we know you have in plenty.
